De Ducelia à Castellane la Vaillante.
L'histoire de Castellane, mouvementée et intense, remonte aux temps les plus reculés. Le bourg changea plusieurs fois de nom : l'oppidum de Ducelia puis Salinae au temps des Romains et Petra Castellana au VIIIème siècle. Au Moyen-Age, la cité s'installe définitivement au pied d'un roc abrupt, sur la rive droite du Verdon.
Le centre ancien
Passer les vieilles portes de la cité, se laisser aller à musarder au hasard des ruelles est un véritable plaisir. Vous y découvrirez l'église Saint-Victor, construite à la fin du XIIème siècle qui présente une architecture des plus intéressantes à la croisée du style roman et gothique. La Tour Pentagonale et la Tour de l'Horloge datent du Moyen-Age. Elles faisaient partie des quatorze tours insérées dans les remparts de la cité. Le Pont du Roc, longtemps seul lieu stratégique pour passer le Verdon, a été détruit de nombreuses fois. Son origine est mal connue mais elle remonterait probablement à l'époque romaine. La chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc, bâtie à 903 mètres d'altitude au sommet du Roc, domine le pays de Castellane depuis le début du XIIIème siècle, mais son apparence actuelle ne date que de la fin du XIXème siècle. Les murs sont recouverts d'ex-voto. Depuis le XVème siècle, Notre-Dame du Roc, Sainte Patronne de Castellane, a été un lieu de pèlerinage. Le plus spectaculaire est celui qui a lieu le soir du 14 Août, c'est la "veillée aux flambeaux" qui déroule son ruban lumineux sur le sentier du Roc.
Une héroïne, la belle Judith
Sur la place de l'église, la Porte de l'Annonciade est le théâtre chaque année de la Fête du Pétardier. C'est la célébration du souvenir d'un lointain épisode. En 1586, les guerres de Religion sèment la terreur en France. Le Baron d'Allemagne et le Duc de Lesdiguières portent leur regard sur la petite cité. Mais, c'est sans compter sur le courage d'une habitante du village, Judith Andrau qui ébouillante du haut de cette porte, le Capitaine qui dirige l'opération. Castellane est une fois encore libérée des griffes de ceux qui la convoitent et l'allégresse de la victoire ne tarde pas à se répandre dans les rues du village. Depuis, les Castellanais célèbrent le courage de leur héroïne chaque année le Dimanche le plus proche du 31 janvier.

Au carrefour des Alpes et de la Méditerranée, au c½ur de la Réserve Géologique de Haute
Provence et du Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon, ville étape sur la Route Napoléon et porte des célèbres Gorges du Verdon, Castellane est une cité dynamique et attachante, mêlant avec habileté les richesses de son passé, sa vocation touristique et ses nombreuses activités.

To Ducelia at Castellane, the Valiant.
The history of Castellane, eventful and intense, dates back to ancient times. The town changed its name several times: the oppidum Ducelia Salinae then in Roman times and Petra Castellana in the eighth century. In the Middle Ages, the city finally settled at the foot of a steep rock on the right bank of the Verdon.
The old center
Pass the old city gates, to let go to wander at random streets is a pleasure. You'll find the church of Saint-Victor, built in the late twelfth century which has a very interesting architecture at the crossroads of Romanesque and Gothic. Pentagonal Tower and Clock Tower dating from the Middle Ages. They were part of the fourteen rounds inserted into the ramparts of the city.
